Airways Golf League — Week 18 Recap: September 8, 2026
The fifth week of the second half
After a two-week gap — September 1 washed out by rain — the league returned to Airways on Tuesday to find a familiar-looking course and an unfamiliar-looking roster. Only seven players teed it up on the back nine, the smallest field of the second half. The absences were significant, the birdies were nonexistent for the second straight week, and the second-half bonus race got shaken up by both what happened on the course and what didn't happen off it.
Kevin Gallagher Likely Done for the Season
Word arrived this week that Kevin Gallagher, co-leader of the second-half bonus race coming into Tuesday, has started a new job — one that is expected to keep him off the golf course for the rest of the season. Given the length of the Airways season and the demands of a new position, Kevin's league year is likely over.
That's a significant development. Kevin G. had been tied with his brother John at 11 second-half bonus points. He sits third on the season par leaderboard (28) behind Logan Jarvis and Kevin Kearns, and his 13-point breakout on August 18 was one of the biggest single-week bonus hauls of the second half. Congratulations on the new job — golf will miss you.
The immediate result: John Gallagher takes the sole lead of the second-half bonus race with a target-met round on Tuesday, and Kevin's 11 points sit locked in place, possibly for good.
John Gallagher: Sole Second-Half Leader
John Gallagher was the story of the night — the man who inherited the second-half lead by process of both his own play and his brother's absence.
He posted 10 points on a target of 9 — one bonus point, target met, and a 45-stroke round, the lowest of the night by three strokes. He parred three holes (10, 15, and 18) and picked up bogey points elsewhere. His scoring stretch from hole 10 through hole 13 was par, bogey, bogey, bogey — five points banked in the first four holes, essentially locking up his target early.
John's second-half scoring line: 11, 5, 10, 11, 10 — four target-met weeks out of five. He now sits alone at the top of the second-half bonus race with 12 points.
Logan Jarvis Has a Rough One
Logan Jarvis shot 48 — his highest stroke total in nearly two months — and posted 6 points on a target of 14. Missed by eight. That's the largest target miss of anyone all second half, and his second-largest target miss of the entire season.
His scorecard: bogey, double, par, bogey, +3, double, bogey, bogey, double. One par (hole 12) and four bogey points (holes 10, 13, 16, 17) — five scoring holes total. Two doubles on the two par-5s hurt, and a triple on hole 14 sealed it. The Logan mystique has taken a small hit here — three of his last five official weeks have now been target misses, and his second-half bonus tally stays at 6.
Whether this is a run of bad rounds or something more meaningful will become clearer next week, but for now: the target-based system is doing exactly what it's designed to do to a player who set the bar so high for himself.
Joe Alvarez: Two Target-Met Weeks in a Row
The Joe Alvarez arc continues its unexpected redemption. After a spring of struggles (four consecutive target misses to open the season) and famously non-golf-related departures, Joe has now met his target in all three of his most recent appearances. Tuesday: 5 points on a target of 3, two bonus points, and a 49-stroke round — his lowest of the season.
The scoring was built around a stretch of four consecutive bogey points on holes 11 through 14, capped by a fifth bogey point on 18. No pars, no big numbers when it counted. The Joe who left the course after one hole in the rain and the Joe who sat in his car during light drizzle now feels like a distant memory. Whatever clicked in July has clicked to stay.
Dave Deyette: One Point Short
Dave Deyette posted 6 points on a target of 7 — missed by one, no bonus. His only par came on hole 18, and four bogey points elsewhere (10, 11, 13, 14) got him most of the way there. A double on 15 and an 8 on 17 kept him from crossing the target line. The Bogey Whisperer was, in fact, whispering — just not quite loud enough.
Chris McKone Has a Mixed Bag
Chris McKone posted 5 points on a target of 7 — missed by two. But his round had two pars in it (holes 12 and 15) plus a bogey point on 18. The middle of his card — a triple on 13 and a quadruple 9 on 16 — was the damage. He's now met his target in eight of eleven official appearances this season, still one of the most consistent performers in the league even with the miss.
Len Stadnicki Meets His Target on the Nose
Len Stadnicki posted 4 points on a target of 4 — hit the number exactly, no bonus. He parred hole 11 (the friendly par-5), added bogey points on 10 and 18, and grinded through some rough stretches in the middle. It's his second consecutive target-met second-half week, quietly getting back into the flow.
Ted Cowles Misses Again
Ted Cowles posted 4 points on a target of 5 — missed by one, his second consecutive miss after starting the second half three-for-three. He collected four bogey points (10, 13, 14, 15) but couldn't manage a par or cover for triples on 16 and 18. The Cowles staircase has hit a small landing.
Where the Pars Came From
Just eight pars on the night across five holes — a low count reflecting both the small field and the tough day:

- Hole 15: Chris McKone, John Gallagher
- Hole 18: Dave Deyette, John Gallagher
- Hole 10: John Gallagher
- Hole 11: Len Stadnicki
John Gallagher led with 3 pars. Chris McKone had 2. Logan, Deyette, and Stadnicki had 1 each.
Second Straight Birdieless Week
For the second consecutive week — and only the second time all season two weeks in a row have gone without a birdie (the first was 4/21 to 4/28 in the preseason) — nobody made better than par. Season total holds at 21 birdies.
The Back Nine's More Modest Night
The back nine averaged 5.7 Stableford points across the seven players — its lowest average since the June 30 recap. Whether that's the smaller field (fewer strong players present) or the course reasserting itself is up for interpretation. The back nine hasn't fully "given up," but the extraordinary averages of June and August have moderated.

Attendance Watch
Nine absent this week — one of the largest missed-list totals of the season. Bill Gallagher, Bill Oravec, and Kevin Kearns — three of the most consistent target-meeters — all sat out the same week. Kevin Gallagher's absence is now presumed long-term. Tom Wieland missed his sixth consecutive week. Dave Zogbaum's cameo remains a one-time appearance. Bill Gallagher and Kevin Kearns skipping the same night eliminates two players who could otherwise have shaken up the bonus race.
Small field. No birdies. John Gallagher inherits sole possession of the second-half lead. And congratulations to Kevin G. on the new job — the league appreciates the pars.
