2013 End of Season Outing and Banquet

A beautiful day for golf.

Closest to the Pin winner: Manny – 11’8”

Annual long drive winner: Gene

Don’t forget, next year the Patrizzi rule goes into effect: give Gene $20 and the rest of the league gets to participate in the longest drive.

I like to thank Meyer, Bill G. and Kevin for all the effort they put in to make this league running smoothly.
Thanks to Airways and St. Annes.

I like to send a Get Well Soon to: Rob and Larry – hope to see you guys next year!

This year was a year I won’t soon forget.  Thanks to all you guys for another enjoyable year of golf.
See you next year!

Week 16 (Final)

Great night for the last "official" round of Phoenix Golf League.

First off, congratulations to the team of Tom Confrey and Ed Rudman – this year’s Phoenix Golf League Champions!  Not only did they win the Championship, they beat Abbott and Costello by 2.5 points, too!!

I really didn’t think it could be done, but someone tied Ted Cowles (27 net) for the low net of year.  See SandBagger of the Week to see which golfer was waiting for the last week of golf to have his best game of the year.  He did it with a sore back and he did it against me.

Ed Rudman took top honors in the individual golfer standings with  23 total points.  Ed started with a 18 hcp and ended with a 13 hcp.  Great year Ed!

It was good to see my Big Brother Bill back on the course.

Even though the league has ended, we usually still golf on Tuesdays.  We’ll send out an email to see who is golfing next Tuesday.
if not, we’ll see you at the tournament.

Here are the teams and  pecking order for the End-of-the-Year Tournament:

Week 15

Well, we adverted a wash-out by having Joe and Ted go off 1st and it turned out to be a beautiful night.   I was getting nervous about having Larry and Gene being 1st off.

It looks like it’s a 2 horse race for the Championship round, between league leaders Confrey / Rudman and Kearns / Russell.  TC and Ed have a slim 1.5 point lead over Kevin and Manny.  Can the 2 time past Championship team of Kearns / Russell, knock off the rookie team of Confrey / Rudman??

I guess my lucky Red Sox shirt didn’t work on Kevin.  Now that I think about it, Kevin’s a Red Sox fan and that cancelled the luck out.  Needless to say, Lenny and I got our butts handed to us by Kevin and Manny.  I lost my bet with Kevin and had to pay him a $1.

Ed Rudman is still the Individual League leader with 21 points, with Kevin a mere 2 points back.  Kevin can only tie Ed but with any points won by Ed or points loss by Kevin and Ed will be the out-right winner.

Ted Cowles is still holding on strong to the Leagues Low Net leader with 27.  Unless someone is padding their handicap and goes low next week, his score will be tough to beat!

We’re going off the front nine next week and here are the starting tee times.  Since we’re going off earlier, I moved up the times by 10 minutes.

4:00        Abbot and Costello         vs            Billeter / Stadnicki
4:08        Pierce / Wieland               vs            Galiszuski / Williams
4:16        Hemphill / Oravec            vs            Deyette / Stadnicki
4:26        Gallagher / Keilich            vs            Alvarez / Cowles
4:34        Myers / Patrizzi                 vs            Frankel / White
4:42        Kearns / Russell                vs            Confrey / Rudman

SandBagger of the Week:

Bill Oravec – gave a good try to take low net away from Ted by shooting a net 31.  Good round Bill!

Byrdie Club:

2 returnees: John Hemphill, who shot his bird on the every popular par 4 14th hole and Kevin "$1" Kearns, who bagged his bird on the par 5 11th hole.  Great shots Gentlemen!

Eagle Club:

Nada – Eagle Joe said, this is one of the quietest club he every been in!

Week 14

Can the weather hold for 2 more weeks?  Another beautiful night for golf.

Tom Wieland and myself had a gentleman's bet last night.  The bet was: Tom’s coral (pink) shirt against my "new" lucky Red Sox shirt, whoever lost could not wear their coral (pink) shirt  for the rest of the (short) season.

1 week to go before the Championship round and Confrey / Rudman now have a slim 2 point lead over Frankel / White.  While Kearns / Russell slip back to 3rd place (4th if you count the league leaders of Abbott / Costello).  Next up for Confrey / Rudman will be the team of Galiszuski / Williams.

Ed Rudman is still sitting on top of the Individual Leader board, who has a 2 point lead over Kevin. Meyer and Lenny are a mere 2.5 points back while Manny dropped to 4 points back.  Ed controls his own destiny.  Win and he’s in.

Kevin’s already betting with his next weeks opponent but Kevin's opponent will be wearing his "new" lucky Red Sox shirt and will be ready for his challenge.

Ted with 2 more weeks, looks like he has a lock on low net for the league.  Hermann and I gave it a shot last night but came up a little short (see SandBagger of the Week)

SandBagger of the Week:

There was a tie between Hermann "Who Needs a Pitching Wedge" Keilich and Dave "Bring it on Kearns" Deyette who both shot a net round of 29.  Good round Gentlemen!

Byrdie Club:

All returnees: Dave Deyette birdied the par 4, 1st hole while Tom Confrey and Ted Cowles shot their birds on the par 4, 9th hole.  Manny Russell bagged his birdie on the par 4, 2nd hole.  Great shots Gentlemen!

Eagle Club:

Nobody – Eagle Joe wants company.

Championship week tee times will go out in reverse standing order.  Abbott / Costello will go out as if they’re in 12 place.  So what ever your teams standing is..

Starting at 4:10:

12th vs 11th
10th vs 9th
8th vs 7th
6th vs 5th
4th vs 3rd
2nd vs 1st

Week 13

Beautiful night for golf.  I hope the rest of the year will be just as nice.

2 more weeks to go, and then the Championship round.  Confrey / Rudman have a slim 3.5 lead over Kearns / Russell.  There are 5 teams who still have a shot at the title.  Some slimmer than others.

With Ed sitting out next week, can  Kevin, Meyer, Manny, and Lenny move up the ‘Total Points’ leader board?

Is there a golfer that can put one more good round together to knock Ted out the League Low Net leader?

Abbott and Costello:

For those who left early or for those who weren’t paying attention, we had a league meeting to discuss, ‘What if Abbott and Costello won the Championship?’.  It was voted to have the league officers split the prize money!

 SandBagger of the Week:

Dave Zogbaum – put together a fine net round of 31.  Great round Zogger!

Byrdie Club:

1 returnee – John Hemphill, who destroyed the par 3s by birding the 13th and 15th holes.  His 3 hole total was 7.  Great shooting John!

Eagle Club:

JOE ALVAREZ EAGLED THE 11TH HOLE!!!   Joe drained a long putt for the eagle.   Great shooting Joe!
And bought the pitcher of beers, too!

Week 12

Lucked out again with the weather last night!

Congratulations to Ted Cowles for his 1st place finish in the Cranmore Hill Climb – USA Track & Field Mountain Running National Championship.

Is TC bringing back any souvenirs from the British Open?

I’ve seen people hooking their golf balls into the field on the 2nd hole, but last night I saw my opponent hook his driver over the bushes, over the fence, into the field on the 2nd hole.  Most everyone heard the story so I won’t mention Nick’s name.

Joe Alvarez is getting close to being fined a ‘penalty’ pitcher of beer for his birdie from July 16th.   This is the 2nd week that he bailed!  Speaking of Joe… has anyone noticed the score cards?  One of the advertisements,  is for a Enrique J. Alvarez – “Retirement Doctor, LLC”.  Any relations, Joe?

Wow – 8:15  no one at the course.  I thought they were going to take the pitcher of beer John and I were drinking.

We have 4 weeks left to golf. Three weeks to jockey for position and 1 week for the Championship.  Talking about Championship week, if we can’t slow down Confrey / Rudman, it will be one boring playoff!Next up for Confrey / Rudman is the team of Frankel / White.

2nd place team of Kearns / Russell a slim 5.50 behind the leaders.

If you can’t make the End-of-the-Year Tournament, please let me know.  If we need to get sub, we can.  Officially not playing: Rob, Larry

SandBagger of the Week:
Meyer Frankel who shot a fine 30 net.  When asked about his round, Meyer said that he didn’t play golf in the morning.  Go figure.  Great round Meyer!

Byrdie Club:

No birds!

Eagle Club:

Not looking good..

Week 11

I like to thank Airways for the carts. Not only did they help create a breeze, on such a hot night, but they also got us to the shade quicker too!

I wonder.  If I put my name and address on my golf balls, do you think I would get all the ones I lost last night back??

Is the Juggernaut team of Abbot and Costello showing signs of weakness?  They split with Galiszuski and Williams.

 SandBagger of the Week:

There was a tie between Bill Gallagher and Ed Rudman.  New weekly game show, "Who’s the Biggest SandBagger?"  Good round, Bill and Ed!

Week 8

Well, we managed to get the round in after a short rain delay.  The sun came out and so did the bugs!!

We had 3 golfers who didn’t finish out the round.  The holes, which weren’t played, were giving the max stroke for that hole(s).

We had John Gallagher on the course last night playing against (sorry) Mike.   One of the good things about John playing is, he brought down the average age of our golfers in the league down to 50 years old!!!

Did anyone see that golfer last night that looked like Malcolm Powell?

Just a note:  if you can’t make it to golf or will be late, (if you can) please call my cell phone or call your playing partner so we can adjust the tee times accordingly.  Some times sending out an email, might be sent after the golfer has left for the course.

SandBagger of the Week:

Not hard to guess who that was, Johnny "Thank You" Gallagher.   That’s what Mike heard when he told John how many strokes Mike was giving him!!!  John shot a net 26.  Good round John!

Byrdie Club:

Two newbies and one returnee:  John "E" Hemphill nailed his first bird on the par 4 2nd hole and Mark "E" Stadnicki bagged his bird on the par 4 9th hole.  Nick "E" Billeter shot his 2nd bird of the year on the par 5 4th hole.  Great shot Gentlemen!
