2015 End of Season Outing and Banquet

Great way to end the Phoenix Golf League!

First off, thanks to Meyer Frankel for all his hard work for balancing the monies so we could have a great outing, to Bill Gallagher for the weekly blog and to Kevin Kearns for the pictures (and pitchers).

Thanks to Airways, they treated us good.

Thanks to St. Annes for a beautiful day and good food.
Thanks to everyone for my gift.  I think this one will last a little longer than a week!

So on saying that…..
Longest Drive goes to Kyle Graves, who just beat out ‘Your Mom’!  I guessing this is Rob’s mom.  Great drive Kyle!

Closest to the pin goes to Kevin Kearns – 14’ 11”.  Great shot Kevin!
1st place team: Kevin Kearns, Manny Russell, Rob Pierce and Kyle Graves – winning score of -5

2nd place team: Ed Williams, Mike Galiszuski, Larry Myers and Mark Stadnicki – posted a score of -1

Everyone else came in 3rd and gets a ‘Participatory Trophy’!

If anyone’s interested in golfing on Tuesday, reply back to this email (include everyone) so we can get an idea of who will be showing up.

Once again thanks and I hope to see everyone next year!

Week 15

Another great night for golf!

After last night, 4 teams are mathematically out of the race for 1st.  There are 2 teams tied for the top spot with 40.50 points: Joe Alvarez and Ted Cowles with John Hemphill and Bill Oravec.  (EDIT: due to a scoring correction, Hemphill / Oravec have moved into sole possession of first place with 41.00 points).  With a strategic move (of not showing up), Frankel and White jumped up to the 3rd spot and Deyette / Zogbaum move into 4th.  Still a close race.

It’s down to a 2 man race for the Individual points lead with Dave Deyette (18.50) having a slim 1 point lead over John Hemphill (17.50).

Don’t forget, the Phoenix Golf League will not be playing at Airways next Tuesday September 29th.  Our last official week will be on Tuesday October 6th.

Here are the matchups for the Championship round:

Pierce / Wieland        vs   Confrey / Myers
Kearns / Russell         vs   Galiszuski / Williams
Gallagher / Kielich     vs   Deyette / Stadnicki  (2 weeks in a row)
Deyette / Zogbaum   vs   Frankel  / White
Hemphill / Oravec     vs   Alvarez / Cowles

SandBagger of the Week:

Mike Galiszuski shot a fine 30 net.   Great round Mike!

Will Dave White’s 27 net hold for one more round?

Byrdie Club:

Kevin Kearns had a great chance on a Eagle on the par 5 11th hole.  Did he make it (see Eagle Club)? If he did, he wouldn’t be in the Byrdie Club.  Tom Confrey also birdied the par 5 11th hole.  While Ted Cowles bagged his bird on the par 4 18th hole.  Great shooting Gentlemen!

Eagle Club:

Kevin was close but no cigar!

Week 14

Beautiful night for golf, but boy once the sun goes down . . .

Hey Hermann, how are you feeling?

Two more weeks to go and it’s still a close race.  Only 7.5 points separate the 1st place team from the last place team.  The team of Alvarez / Cowles has a slim .50 point lead over B Deyette / Zogbaum.

With Meyer Frankel and John Hemphill "missing in action", Dave Deyette jumped into 1st place for the individual lead with 16.50. Meyer and John are in 2nd with 15.50.

Being the end of the season and the hcps are lower, it will be tough to beat Dave White’s low net of 27.

Kevin, how come I didn’t get a dollar??

SandBagger of the Week:

There was a tie:  Dave Zogbaum and Ted Cowles shot a low net of 33.   Now we know why these guys are on the top 2 teams!  Great round gentlemen!

Byrdie Club:

Larry Myers joins the club bagging his bird on the par 3 7th hole and Bill Oravec downs his bird on the par 4 9th hole.  Bill Deyette had a very fine bird, also on the par 4 9th hole.  Great shooting, gentlemen!

Eagle Club:

It’s being to look like a shutout!

Week 13

Well on the bright side . . . it wasn’t raining.

Happy Birthday to Ed Williams

I’m going to move the tee times to an earlier times- 3:50 – 3:58 – 4:04 – 4:12 – 4:20.  If you can’t make the early tee times, let me know and I’ll move you back to a later time slot.

Also, we’re coming up a little short on money.  It was put on the table to fore-go the dozen golf balls and this would make up the balance.  Any suggestions or questions or concerns, let Meyer and/or myself know.  Meyer will have a better picture in the next few weeks.  But as it stands now, we’re about $400, short.

With only 3 weeks left, it’s still anyone’s ballgame.

Just a reminder: we are not play September 29th and our last night is October 6th.

SandBagger of the Week:

With 3 weeks left to go someone tied Dave White with a low net of 27.  Congratulations go to -- Dave White for shooting a fine net 27.

Byrdie Club:

Birdies awards go to: Dave Deyette for bagging his bird on the par5 16th hole and in the same 4-some, Rob Pierce parred the par 4 16th hole, who later was told it was a par 5!  President Zogger added to his birdie total with a 2 on the par3 10th hole.  Bill Gallagher also birdied the par3 10th (while whistling Happy Birthday).

Week 12

FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!

It was good to finally meet Kyle Graves (maybe Tom W. wasn’t so glad!)!

We have 4 more weeks of golf with one scheduled outage on 9/29.  Our Championship round will be 10/6.  With the sun setting earlier each, try to get to the course earlier so to get down before dusk.  We’ll be cutting it close on 10/6.

This is one of the closest race I’ll seen in a long time.

SandBagger of the Week:

President Zogger,  for the 2nd week in-a-row, give or take a 4 week layoff,  shot a fine net 29.  Great round Dave!  Keep it up, we play you in two weeks and we want your handicap lower!

Byrdie Club:

John "E" Hemphill bagged his bird on the par 4 5th hole and Bill "Irish" Gallagher shot his bird on the par 4 6th hole.  Great shooting gentlemen!

Rainout

A couple of things:  I’m really glad we waited and once the rain stopped, we were able to get the round in!

Who am I kidding??

With no more rain-outs, we are scheduled to end on September 29th.  Which poses a problem, most of the league will be playing the United Way golf tournament on that date.  We will postpone our league round until the next week, October 6th.

I’ve talked with Bob Kemp and he said we could also play on Mondays, if we wanted to catch-up.  They only have 1 league playing.

We voted on a new rule and it’s a good one:  if you go the golf course and it’s raining, but you do not get out of your car to come into the club house; your hcp goes down by 2 strokes.  Isn’t this great!  Now you don’t even have to shoot a low round to lower your hcp!!

We also voted on a new name:  Phoenix Puddle Jumpers

Did you know: we only played 2 twice in the last 2 months!

Also everyone should know their tee times for next week and who they’re playing.

Even though it was only 2 rounds ago, think about how long ago that was: Kevin finally paid off his bet:

Week 11

Thanks to Airway for the free carts!

Week 11 – completed.  Four more rounds and then the Championship round.  So if we don’t have any more rain-outs, our last week of golf is September 8th.

I didn’t know Kevin was a government worker.  I heard he had to receive a grant to buy a pitcher of beer!

With 5 weeks to go,  the teams are starting to bunch up.  Which team can put together a couple of hot weeks and pull away from the pack?

Next Tuesday, Dave White will be playing as a retired Phoenix employee!

SandBagger of the Week:

It was over-heard that Zogger likes to play either against Tom Wieland and (from how Zogger scored,) at least in the same foursome as Tom. Dave Zogbaum shot a fine net round of 30.  Great round, Zogger!

Byrdie Club:

A couple of newbies: John Hemphill bagged his 1st bird on par 4 5th hole and Ed Williams had a fine "no putt" 1st bird on the par 4 2nd hole.  President Zog pardoned his bird on the par 4 5th hole and Dave Deyette shot his bird on the par 5 4th hole.  Great shot gentlemen!

There is still hope with 5 weeks remaining!

Week 10

Last night, does anyone know what that bright shining thing in the sky, was?

Dave White’s count-down to retirement – 7 days!

There was a motion on the floor (Larry), that, anyone who still owes pitchers of beer at the end of the season, has to pay it off at the tournament.

I’m not pointing fingers (Kevin).  Kevin did buy the pitcher he owed from last week, but getting a birdie and losing to me for a pitcher…he now owes 2 for next week.  At this rate, we will all be drinking for free at the tournament (or at least next week!).

SandBagger of the Week:

Joe Alvarez – who shot a fine net 29.   Great round, Joe!

Byrdie Club:

Another flock of birdies: Bill Gallagher shot his 1st bird of the year on the par 4 18th hole. While Dave Deyette bagged his bird on the par 5 11th hole and Kevin Kearns snagged his bird with a great chip in shot on the par3 15th hole.  Then you have Joe Alvarez playing against Bill Oravec… Joe nailed his bird on the par 4 18th hole and not wanting to be out done, Bill follows suite and drains his birdie putt.  T.C.  downed his bird on the par 5 11th hole.  Great shot gentlemen!

Week 9

It was Tuesday and you guess it…..rain!  At least this time, most of us got in dry.

A schedule update:  we had 4 rain-outs (so far) this year.  We just finished week 9 and have 7 more weeks.  Our projected end of season is September 1st.

SandBagger of the Week:

What a difference a week make:  Last week my opponent was heading for the Sandbagger of the week until they closed the course and this week it was my turn.  Dave Deyette hit a fine net 28.  Great round Dave!

Byrdie Club:

Dave Deyette shot his first bird on the par 4 1st hole and then bagged his 2nd bird on the par 4 5th hole.  Brian Nick downed his 1st bird on the par 4 9th hole.  While Bill Deyette captured his bird on the par 4 8th hole and Kevin Kearns nailed his bird on the par 4 9th hole.  Great shot gentlemen!

Rainout

It was good to see Ron Waid back "in the club house" (instead of "on the course" . . . get it? . . . because it was raining!)!

We will get this round in (sooner or later)!

Extended forecast….it’s only 50% chance of rain next Tuesday!

I really wanted to get last night’s round in, even though I was getting spanked.  My opponent was 1 under went we picked up on 17.  TC had a great round going.
I might have to hit the driving range a few times so to give TC a little challenge.

Subs for next week: Meyer Frankel and Tom Wieland.

Byrdie Club:

A flock of birdies: Manny Russell starts it off with birding the par 3 10th hole.  In the same foursome, Meyer Frankel bagged his bird on the par 4 14th hole.  While Rob Pierce downed his bird on the par 5 11th hole.  Great shots, Gentlemen!

Week 7

First: Happy Birthday Larry! When I left, people were still celebrating your birthday!

Interesting golf night.  We got the round in.  It only took two tries!  When I left, there were blue skies and it was pretty nice.  Not so much by the time I got home, black skies, thunder and lightning.  What a difference 20 miles make.

It was good to see John Gallagher back on the links (but don’t ask his opponent (Dad)).

Next week is the halfway point, please make an effort to have your dues paid up.

SandBagger of the Week:

John "E" Hemphill shot a fine net 31.  Great round John!  I bet your next week's opponent appreciates it too! (and I do!)

Week 6

Here are the updated stats.  There are a few changes.  Thanks Ed for catching the 14th hole error.

This was a hard one because it all added up.  But if you’re going to make a mistake, make it an eagle instead of a birdie.  We get more beer out of it!

Finally got a round in!

Welcome back Mike!!

Is it a coincidence….Mike comes back and now he and Ed are in first place??

Happy Anniversary Hermann!

Bill Oravec almost surpassed Dave White (27), but came up short.  Bill shot a fine net 28.  Great round Bill!

Byrdie Club:

Wow a "flock" of birdies: Let’s start off with Manny getting his first bird on the par 5 11th hole.  While TC bagged his first bird on the par 3 10th hole and his 2nd bird on the par 4 14th hole.  Ed Williams downed his first bird on the par 4 14th hole and Dave White got his 2nd bird of the season on the par 3 15th hole.  Great shots Gentlement!!

Eagle Club:

Well, we did have Bill Deyette and Dave White shoot a 3 on the 16th hole.  Does that count??

Week 5

Dodged another bullet.  We got the round in before it rained!

If you go onto Bill G’s blog, you will see a picture of my brother holding 2 dollars and smiling.  Let me explain the reason why Bill was smiling, he was thinking:  "They paid me 2 dollars to beat Dave.  When I would have paid them to allow me to play Dave, so I could beat him!

There have been a few sideline discussions on starting the rounds a little later: say around 4:30.  There are a few golfers who are scrambling to make the earlier tee times.  It doesn’t bother me starting later.  I don’t think there is another league behind us.  I’m going to go with the flow.  Think about it and I would like to hear what every thinks and I’m opened up for some or any solutions.

SandBagger of the Week:

Ted Cowles who shot a fine net 32.  Great round Ted!

Byrdie Club:

One newbie this week: Kevin "I’ll buy the pitcher next week!" Kearns bagged his bird on the par 4 8th hole.

Eagle Club:

Another almost on the 8th hole,  see the picture on the blog.  I shouldn’t have to say whose ball it was.

Bill G's approach on the sixth hole.  You could say it was a crappy shot, and Bill was pissed.
