End of Season Outing and Banquet

Final Note

Well the Phoenix Golf League is officially over. It’s been a great year and it ended on a hot, sunny day. Who would have guessed, that Sunday would have turned out so nice (hot and humid).

We had two closest to the pin contest. The first one was on hole 2 and the other was on hole 14. The winner on the 2nd hole was Meyer Frankel and Paul Morano took the 14th hole. I can't remember the distances.

We all put in a dollar to see which team would come in first for the tournament. Team of Meyer Frankel and Mark Stadnicki took the honors and the money!

I was glad that I was in the second group out. The heckling at the 18th hole was getting louder with each new group walking up to the green.

The "peanut gallery" started small . . .

. . . and grew larger with each group . . .

. . . with Kevin leading the heckling.

I want to thank everyone for an enjoyable season and I hope to see everyone next year!

Dave

Paul Morano and Bill Gallagher showed great golf cart management on the 16th hole.

As Paul was teeing off on the 13th hole, a hawk swooped down in front of the tee and caught a chipmunk.

He flew up into a nearby tree a few moments later with his prey.

Rob proudly shows off his balls. Shaun is understandably not impressed.

Dave presided over a fine spread for dinner.

I have no idea what this is all about.

The moon rose over the end of a great close to the 2008 season.

Week 16 (Final)

Great night for the last week of golf!

First, I want to thank Bob Kemp for the carts and the closest-to-the-pin prizes! As always, it was great to play at Airways! Thanks Bob!!

Let’s get the weekly stats out of the way!

Sandbagger of the Week: There’s a tie between Len Stadnicki and Marilyn Dolan. Both had a net of 28. Great round Len and Marilyn!

Byrdie Club: 3 returnees: Kevin Kearns birdied the 4th hole. Manny Russell birdied the 1st hole and Gene Patrizzi, who also birdied the 1st hole. Great shooting, gentlemen!

Eagle Club: No new members.

We had 2 closest-to-the-pins. One was on the 7th hole and the other one, on the 9th hole. The 7th hole was first posted by Gene Patrizzi (first group off) and lasted to the last group where Mark Stadnicki ball landed 31 feet 1 inch from the pin. On the 9th hole, I only seen one name on the list and that was Malcolm Powell who ended up being 16 feet 10 inches from the hole. I didn’t see any circle around their scores on those holes, hmmmm! But needless to say, great shots Mark and Malcolm. Both received a dozen golf balls and a free 9 hole round for 2 at Airways.

CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND

Congratulations to the team of Kearns / Russell for repeating as Phoenix Golf League Champions.

Kevin Kearns and Manny Russell beat the team of Meyer Frankel and Mark Stadnicki by 3 strokes to retain their title. It was one of the closest matches in a while.

Manny drives his team to victory!

With Kevin beating Meyer, this leaves a 3-way tie for Individual Golf Standings between Marilyn Dolan, Meyer Frankel, and Kevin Kearns. They all have 20.50 points.
Congratulations to the 3 of them for their outstanding play during the year. Congrats – Marilyn, Meyer, and Kevin!

Low Net of the Year: it’s a tie between Shaun Mackin and Jason Zwanch. Both shot a net of 27. Great Rounds Shaun and Jason!

SandBagger of the Year: This went to a tie breaker. We had Rob Pierce, Shaun Mackin, Dave Deyette, Bill Gallagher, and Ted Cowles, all had 2 SandBagger of the Week awards. I went to, ‘How many of these golfers were in 2nd place’. Rob Pierce just beat out Ted Cowles, 2 to 1. Rob wins the SandBagger of the Year award and like a true Sandbagger, his handicap went up this week! This is a science and Rob has it down.

The "Sandbagger of the Year" in action.

I’ll be sending out more information on the up coming events.

Thanks to Meyer ‘The Money Man’ Frankel for taking care of the money and the outing. Also, thanks to Kevin ‘Click Click’ Kearns, for his great weekly pictures and Bill ‘Scoop’ Gallagher for putting together the ‘Phoenix Golf’ blog with his great captions along with Kevin’s pictures. Thanks again.

Another year comes to an end and it was great golfing with everyone. I hope to see everyone next year! Can Kearns / Russell team, 3-peat??

Dave

Final Standings:

3) Kearns / Russell (47.5 points)
4) Frankel / Larson (47.0 points)
10) Mackin / Pierce (43.5 points)
1) Deyette / Stadnicki (43.0 points)
9) Michaud / Zwanch (40.5 points)
6) Hemphill / Waid (40.5 points)
8) Dolan / Galiszuski (39.5 points)
5) Housman / Morano (37.0 points)
7) Myers / Patrizzi (34.0 points)
2) Gallagher / Keilich (27.5 points)

Win or lose . . . we booze!

Maybe if Hermann had played with golf clubs instead of spindles from the deck railing, his team would not have gone wire-to-wire in last place.

Week 15

One more week to go and two teams have separated themselves from the pack: Frankel / Larson and Kearns / Russell.

Frankel / Larson have a slim .50 points ahead of the defending Champions, Kearns / Russell. These two teams will battle it out for the Championship!

It’s a double header. Meyer Frankel has a 2 point lead over Kevin Kearns and Marilyn Dolan for the Individual golf standings. Kevin, who won it last year, has a shot to tie Meyer, with a win or will this be a first and have a three way tie. Marilyn’s opponent, next week, will be Dave Housman.

John Hemphill, Ellen Panagrosso, Meyer Frankel, and Mark Stadnicki, all parred the 10th hole. You don’t see that too often!

SandBagger of the Week: Winston Hall – Winston shot a fine net 31. Good round Winston!

Byrdie Club: Just one returnee: Me. I birdied the 18th hole. I had a 20 foot putt and I knew it was going in as soon as I stroked it because – why not, I got spanked in the match and what would be more fitting than to get beat and then buy the beer! The rest of the 4-some appreciated it!

Eagle Club: Kevin Kearns heard of the new lower membership fee and took advantage of it. Kevin eagled the 11th hole. I wonder if he got a picture of the putt? Now Czar Pierce has company! Great shot Kevin!

Kevin lines up the eagle putt . . .

. . . and drains it.

Here is how the matches will go next week – front 9:

4:10 Gallagher / Keilich vs Myers / Patrizzi
4:18 Housman / Morano vs Dolan / Galiszuski
4:26 Michaud / Zwanch vs Hemphill / Waid
4:34 Deyette / Stadnicki vs Mackin / Pierce
4:42 Frankel / Larson vs Kearns / Russell --- Championship match

Subs for next week:

Larson
Waid
Galiszuski
(hopefully not Hermann)

See you next week,

Dave

Would you buy a used car from any of these people?

And that, Ellen, is how I won the 1987 Masters!

Standings after Week 15:

4) Frankel / Larson (45.0 points)
3) Kearns / Russell (44.5 points)
1) Deyette / Stadnicki (41.0 points)
10) Mackin / Pierce (40.5 points)
9) Michaud / Zwanch (39.0 points)
6) Hemphill / Waid (37.0 points)
5) Housman / Morano (37.0 points)
8) Dolan / Galiszuski (34.5 points)
7) Myers / Patrizzi (31.0 points)
2) Gallagher / Keilich (25.5 points)

Week 14

Welcome Winston Hall to the Phoenix Golf League!

Winston pays his admission fee.

Two more weeks to go and the race for the top spot just got tighter. With the team of Kearns / Russell falling to Deyette / Stadnicki, there are 3 teams tied for first.

This has been the closest race, I’ve seen. There are still 6 teams, who have a shot at the title and one team with a slim chance but not mathematically out (but I’m not doing the scenarios for them).

SandBagger of the Week: ME! I was trying to avenge my previous loss to Kevin, when he shot a 39 (gross) against me. I didn’t shoot a 39 but I did play well enough to shoot a net 32.

Byrdie Club: If you’re not a member yet, you have two more weeks to join the Byrdie Club. One newbie and 2 returning members: Winston Hall – Winston birdied the 1st hole. After the 1st hole, the rumors were going around that President Zwanch had brought in a ringer! President Zwanch brought Winston up to date with the Byrdie Club rules – birdie = pitcher of beer. (Easy rule.) Bill Gallagher got his bird on the 9th hole. I wonder if Kevin got the picture of it? Dave Deyette got his bird on the 5th hole, with a very fine chip shot to 6 inches to the pin. Good shots, gentlemen!

Yes, Kevin did get the picture of Bill's bird.

Eagle Club: I hear, but it wasn’t verified that Czar Pierce was going to lower the Eagle Club dues from 2 pitchers of beer to 1.

Subs: If I missed anyone, let me know.

08/19
Ron Waid / Ellen Panagrosso
Craig Michaud / Winston Hall
Ted Cowles / Mark Stadnicki
Gene Patrizzi

08/26
Ron Waid
Ted Cowles
Mike Galiszuski

Meyer will be sending out more information on the end of the year tournament, shortly.

Dave

*note – Kevin ‘Killer’ Kearns taught me some new words last night. Especially on my very fine chip shot on the 5th!

Dave's "very fine" chip shot.

On a very wet course, golf shoes are a must (Manny)!

Standings after Week 14:

10) Mackin / Pierce (40.0 points)
4) Frankel / Larson (40.0 points)
3) Kearns / Russell (40.0 points)
1) Deyette / Stadnicki (39.0 points)
6) Hemphill / Waid (37.0 points)
9) Michaud / Zwanch (36.0 points)
5) Housman / Morano (34.0 points)
8) Dolan / Galiszuski (29.5 points)
7) Myers / Patrizzi (29.0 points)
2) Gallagher / Keilich (25.5 points)

In case anybody forgot why the course is named "Airways".

Week 13

Well it didn’t rain, where I was!

3 more weeks to go! 2 weeks of regular play and 1 week of playoffs.

Twilight settles upon another season.

10th vs 9th
8th vs 7th
6th vs 5th
4th vs 3rd

SandBagger of the Week: Mark Stadnicki. Mark’s strategy was not to beat his opponent but it was more, to beat his dad! But either way, Mark shot a fine net 29. Great round Mark!

Byrdie Club: Two returnees: Craig Michaud and Len Stadnicki. Craig after a slow start is coming on strong with his 2nd birdied in two weeks. Craig birdied the 11th hole!. Len birdied the 2nd hardest hole, the 17th! Great shooting, gentlemen!

*note – Len drove the 18th green and was putting for eagle. Sorry Czar Pierce, he didn’t make the putt!

Len pays up.

Eagle Club: Czar Pierce is thinking of opening a Maytag store. He’s getting lonely!

Subs: If you know you are not going to be here, over the next 3 weeks, let me know. So I can schedule you a sub.

I know some people already told me, but send me an email. Thanks!
